  • The tree that thought the axe was one of them

This parable resonates with many of us in today’s world, where the pressure to fit in often feels overwhelming. In our quest for acceptance, we sometimes overlook the ‘axes’ in our lives—those elements that seem harmless yet can cause significant harm. Many people today are caught in a web of expectations, whether from social media, workplace culture, or peer pressure, leading them to compromise their authenticity for the sake of belonging.

Consider the automotive engineer who, despite a burning passion for innovation, finds themselves stifled in a conventional job that offers security but little room for creativity. They may convince themselves that fitting into this mold is the only way to succeed, forgetting that true success often comes from following one’s passion, much like the tree initially misjudged the axe. The real danger lies in ignoring that inner voice urging you to stand tall and true to who you are.

Similarly, many students feel compelled to pursue popular career paths due to societal expectations, rather than following their interests. They may choose lucrative degrees over their dreams, only to find themselves dissatisfied and unfulfilled—like the tree, realizing too late that the axe they welcomed into their life was never meant to nurture their growth.

In these real-life instances, the lesson from the tree is clear: not all that surrounds us is a friend. Embracing our individuality is crucial. It’s okay to be different; it’s okay to stand out. The moment we prioritize fitting in over being true to ourselves, we risk losing our essence.
